Defeat Liverpool! Crouch on Maguire: He was demonized at Manchester United, so happy for him now

Former England striker Crouch spoke about Manchester United defender Maguire on his podcast, condemning the "unacceptable" abuse directed at him over the years and praising his mental strength.

Q: What do you think of Maguire and his recent winning goal at Anfield?

Crouch: I'm really, really happy for him. I've had my share of low points in my career, and I've endured a lot of criticism and criticism, so I understand to some extent what that feels like.

Q: Do you think the criticism he suffered went beyond reasonable limits?

Crouch: The level of criticism he has received, I think, is beyond the acceptable range. The way he attacks his family, his character, his looks, the way he is demonized at this club, it's all wrong.

Q: How do you evaluate the strength of character he has shown in adversity?

Crouch: I think this definitely shows that he has great courage and can continue to perform. Even against Liverpool, it was like, "Oh, why is he playing?!", there was always this disparagement of him starting.

Q: Even though you played for Liverpool, how did you feel when you saw Maguire score at Anfield?

Crouch: Look, there were certainly times when he wasn't good enough and that was pointed out, but I think those accusations went beyond football. When he scores...seriously, I don't want to see any Manchester United player score, but when it's him, I kind of half feel, "happy for him, he kind of deserves it", and I think a lot of people in football feel the same way.

Q: Do you think Maguire will have a chance to return to the England team in the future and even become a hero in the World Cup?

Crouch: I do think that every World Cup we've been to, since 1966 when we haven't won it, there's always going to be someone who scores the winning goal in the World Cup final, and it's going to happen, and then your name will always be tied with Sir Geoff Hurst. This could be anyone! Adam Walton may also be selected for the England team. That's the beauty of football. Someone on the edge of the lineup might score the winning goal. You're more likely to come off the bench and finish the game, score the winning goal in the World Cup final and then have a statue alongside Sir Geoff Hurst. Football is so crazy, and this is also the charm of the World Cup.
