Concerns about the AI bubble are rising, and funds owned by US technology tycoons sell out NVIDIA stocks

As doubts about the artificial intelligence (AI) bubble heat up, a newly submitted 13F document shows that Thiel Macro, a hedge fund owned by American technology tycoon Peter Thiel, sold out the shares of AI chip giant NVIDIA (NVIDIA) last quarter.

Bloomberg News reported that Thiel Macro sold 537,742 NVIDIA shares in the third quarter as of the end of September. Based on the closing price on September 30, these shares were worth approximately US$100 million (approximately NT$3.117 billion).

Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. just announced in October that it would liquidate its NVIDIA holdings and cash out US$5.83 billion. NVIDIA shares have edged up only about 2% since the end of September.

Compared with SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, Thiel’s attitude toward AI development is more conservative, but both of them chose to sell NVIDIA stocks one after another when concerns about the AI investment bubble were rising.

Bloomberg analyzed 909 hedge funds’ 13F filings last quarter and found that investors had mixed views on NVIDIA. 161 increased their investment in NVIDIA, while 160 decreased their investment.

The outside world has mixed opinions on the prospects of companies that have invested heavily in AI. Although these companies continue to raise capital quickly and expand spending, they have yet to demonstrate a profit model that can recoup large investments.

Thiel has not yet responded to emails and requests for comment sent by Bloomberg reporters after office hours.

According to the documents, Thiel Macro currently lists Apple, Microsoft and the reduced Tesla as its main layout targets. Thiel also invested in NVIDIA competitor Substrate, AI startup Mercor and Cognition AI.
